OCD Kids Sacramento is a free support group for kids 18 and under and their families living in and around Sacramento. The goal of this support group is to instill hope among those battling OCD and to provide support to one another by sharing our experiences of the past and present. The group is assisted by Susan Haverty, a therapist specializing in the treatment of OCD.
I am a high school student who first showed symptoms of OCD around the age of 8. At this time, my compulsions did not have a significant effect on my well being, and my OCD went unnoticed until I was 11, when my parents, both physicians themselves, recognized my irregular behavior as charactersitic of a child with OCD. They contacted numerous psychiatrists and health professionals in search of an expert in Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Soon after, I began working with a therapist, using CBT and ERP techniques of treatment to battle against my fears, and a year later I was ready to continue fighting OCD on my own. At the present, I am a happy and motivated student who, I think it is safe to say, has overcome the majority of her fears.
Looking back on my experiences, I've realized how difficult it was for my parents, despite being physicians, to contact anyone with much knowledge regarding OCD, and how much it would have helped to have been able to talk to the families of other individuals with this disorder. The period of time when I was first diagnosed was, as I'm sure it has been for many others, a period of fear and uncertainty. We were unsure as to whether there was much hope for the future. This is why I have started this support group, to guide young individuals newly diagnosed or currently battling OCD, and assure them that there is hope for their battles against OCD.
